What is Zyclara?

Zyclara is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Meda Pharmaceuticals. Zyclara (imiquimod) topical treatment, 2.5% or 3.75% is an immune response modifier used to treat actinic keratoses (AK) of the face or balding scalp. (AK are precancerous skin conditions caused by too much sun exposure).

Treatment with Zyclara Cream has not been studied for the prevention of transmission of human papillomavirus (HPV). Zyclara is not a cure for genital warts. You may still spread this condition to others through vaginal, anal, or oral sex. You also may develop new lesions during treatment.

What doses of Zyclara are available?

Zyclara is available in cream form, in the following doses: 3.75%, white to faintly yellow cream.

Treatment with Zyclara is easier to adhere to than Aldara treatment because it has a simpler dosing regimen. Using too much Zyclara or using it for too long can increase your risk of severe skin reactions. Do not use two different forms of imiquimod on the same treatment area. If you miss a dose, use it as soon as you remember. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose. Use your next dose at the regular time in the evening. Do not double the dose.

The recommended dose is once daily to the skin of the affected area (either the entire face or balding scalp) for two 2-week treatment cycles separated by a 2-week rest period. Apply the cream in a thin layer and rub it completely. Use at bedtime and leave the medicine on for 8 hours. Wash the skin in the morning with water and mild soap. Do not cover the treated area with any type of plastic bandaging (you may use cotton gauze). Wear only cotton underwear when treating genital warts.

Limit your time in the sun. Avoid tanning booths and sunlamps. Use sunscreen and wear protective clothing when outdoors. Do not apply this medication to sunburned skin. How often and how long you use Zyclara will depend on the condition you are treating.

Actinic keratosis:

  • Apply once daily for 2 weeks, followed by 2 weeks without treatment

External genital warts:

  • Apply once daily for up to 8 weeks

Store the cream at room temperature. Store the pump version in an upright position and keep each packet unopened until you are ready to use it. Please read the patient information for more drug information and always speak with a healthcare professional for medical advice or about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
