What is Zomacton?

Zomacton is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured for Ferring Pharmaceuticals Inc. It is a recombinant human growth hormone for the:

  • Treatment of pediatric patients with growth failure due to inadequate secretion of endogenous growth hormone (GH), idiopathic short stature, short stature associated with Turner syndrome, short stature born small for gestational age with no catch-up growth by 2 to 4 years of age, and short stature or growth failure in short stature homeobox-containing gene deficiency
  • Replacement of endogenous GH in adults with GH deficiency

What doses of Zomacton are available?

Zomacton is available as an injection formulation, in the following doses:

  • 5 mg/5 mL vial of bacteriostatic 0.9% NaCl (preserved with benzyl alcohol)
  • 10 mg/1 mL of bacteriostatic water (preserved with 0.33% metacresol), with a 25G reconstitution needle
  • 10 mg vial with a syringe of 1 mL of bacteriostatic water (preserved with 0.33% metacresol), with a vial adapter

Administer by subcutaneous injection to the back of the upper arm, abdomen, buttock, or thigh with a regular rotation of injection sites.

Zomacton contains somatropin as the active ingredient.

Zomacton side effects

The most common side effects of Zomacton in clinical trials include:

  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Fever, headache, flu syndrome
  • Pharyngitis
  • Otitis media
  • Edema
  • Arthralgia, myalgia
  • Paresthesia
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Peripheral edema
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Hyperglycemia
  • Impaired glucose tolerance

In rare instances, Zomacton can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Increased risk of neoplasm in childhood cancer survivors – monitor patients with preexisting tumors
  • Glucose intolerance and diabetes mellitus
  • Intracranial hypertension
  • Serious hypersensitivity reactions – seek medical attention in the case of an allergic reaction
  • Fluid retention
  • Hypoadrenalism
  • Hypothyroidism – monitor thyroid function
  • Slipped capital femoral epiphysis in pediatric patients – monitor patients with onset of a limp or hip/knee pain
  • Progression of preexisting scoliosis in pediatric patients
  • Pancreatitis – monitor patients with abdominal pain
  • Risk of serious adverse reactions in neonates and infants due to benzyl alcohol preservative

Zomacton drug interactions

Zomacton can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Glucocorticoids
  • Cytochrome P450-metabolized drugs
  • Oral estrogen
  • Insulin and/or other hypoglycemic agents

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Zomacton.

Zomacton contraindications

You should not use Zomacton if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient somatropin
  • Have hypersensitivity to any of the other excipients, or diluents in Zomacton
  • Have an acute critical illness
  • Have a history of upper airway obstruction or sleep apnea
  • Have severe respiratory impairment due to the risk of sudden death
  • Have an active malignancy
  • Have active proliferative or severe non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy
  • Are a pediatric patient with closed epiphysis
  • Are a pediatric patient with Prader-Willi syndrome and are severely obese

Talk to your doctor before using Zomacton if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Zomacton
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – it is not known if this medication passes into breast milk during lactation

Zomacton generic

Zomacton is the trademark brand name for somatropin manufactured for Ferring Pharmaceuticals Inc. A generic version of somatropin is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Zomacton savings through NiceRx.
