What is Zinplava?

Zinplava is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc. Zinplava is a human monoclonal antibody that binds to Clostridium difficile toxin B, indicated to reduce the recurrence of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in patients 18 years of age or older who are receiving antibacterial drug treatment of CDI and are at high risk for CDI recurrence.

Zinplava is not indicated for the treatment of c. difficile infection. Zinplava is not an antibacterial drug and should only be used with antibacterial drug treatment of CDI. The pediatric safety and efficacy of Zinplava in patients below 18 years of age have not been established.

What doses of Zinplava are available?

Zinplava is available in injection form, in the following doses: 1,000 mg/40 mL (25 mg/mL) solution in a single-dose vial.

The recommended dose is a single dose of 10 mg/kg as an intravenous infusion over 60 minutes. Dilute before IV infusion. Administer via a low-protein binding 0.2 micron to 5 microns in-line or add-on filter. See the full prescribing information for dilution and administration instructions.

Zinplava can be infused via a central line or peripheral catheter. Do not coadminister other drugs simultaneously through the same infusion line.

The safety and efficacy of repeat administration in patients with CDI have not been studied. Read all FDA-approved patient labeling/patient information, medication guides, and instruction sheets provided. Always speak with your healthcare professional about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Zinplava active ingredients

Bezlotoxumab mechanism of action is as a human monoclonal antibody that binds C. difficile toxin B. Bezlotoxumab does not bind to C. difficile toxin A.

Zinplava side effects

The most common side effects of Zinplava in clinical trials compared to placebo include:

  • Nausea
  • Pyrexia
  • Headache

In rare instances, Zinplava can cause more serious adverse reactions. These can include:

  • Heart Failure – more common in patients with a history of congestive heart failure (CHF). In patients with a history of CHF, treatment should be used when the benefit outweighs the risk

Zinplava drug interactions

Zinplava is eliminated by catabolism, no metabolic drug-drug interactions are expected.

Zinplava contraindications

You should not use Zinplava if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient bezlotoxumab
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Zinplava
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Talk to your doctor before using Zinplava if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Zinplava
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – Lactation risk summary. There is no information regarding the presence of bezlotoxumab in human milk, the effects on the breast-fed infant, or the effects on milk production

Zinplava generic

Zinplava is the trademark brand name for bezlotoxumab manufactured by Merck Sharp & Dohme Corp., a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc. A generic version of bezlotoxumab is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Zinplava savings through NiceRx.
