How do I apply for the Xifaxan patient assistance program?

We’ll need to know details about your healthcare provider, your insurance, and your household income. This information is required by the pharmaceutical manufacturers who ship your medication.

Once we reviewed your information and determined if you are eligible for assistance, we will help to enroll you in the Xifaxan patient assistance program. Prescription Care will handle the application process for you. We’ll also request your Xifaxan medication refills on your behalf for up to 1 year, once you are enrolled in the program.

By getting your Xifaxan medication through Prescription Care, your total cost for the medication will always be $49 per month. 

Can Prescription Care help me get Xifaxan if I have insurance?

If your insurance company refuses to pay for your Xifaxan medication, or you have a high copay or coinsurance responsibility, Prescription Care may be able to help. We may even be able to help you if you don’t have insurance.

How much is Xifaxan with insurance?

The cost of Xifaxan will vary by the healthcare plan. Your healthcare provider or pharmacist will be able to calculate your copay with your current insurance. Keep in mind that you’ll likely save more if you get your Xifaxan medication through Prescription Care if approved for assistance.

How much is Xifaxan without insurance?

Xifaxan prices without insurance will vary depending on where you buy it, the number of tablets per pack, and the strength of the tablets. You can expect to pay around $700 for a pack of 30x 200mg tablets, and up to around $2,700 for a pack of 60x 550mg tablets. With Prescription Care you’ll always pay a flat monthly fee of $49.

What is Xifaxan?

Xifaxan is an antibiotic used to treat stomach and bowel conditions. Often, it’s prescribed to treat travelers’ diarrhea in adults and children aged 12 and up, as well as irritable bowel syndrome in adults. Xifaxan can also be prescribed to adults to reduce the likelihood of hepatic encephalopathy occurring. The medication helps with these conditions by stopping the spread of the bacteria that causes them.

Travelers’ diarrhea is an infection of the stomach and bowels that are caught whilst traveling and on vacation. Most often, it’s caused by an infection of non-invasive E. coli. Xifaxan is proven to be an effective antibiotic for treating E. coli. infections. 

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has a range of causes. Xifaxan can reduce inflammation and eliminate strains of bacteria that can cause or contribute to IBS. It can be used repeatedly to treat IBS without losing its effectiveness. 

Hepatic encephalopathy is a condition that causes changes in consciousness, mood, and personality, due to a build-up of ammonia in the blood. Xifaxan can reduce levels of gut bacteria that produce ammonia, giving relief from symptoms, and reducing the likelihood of the condition recurring.

Xifaxan active ingredients

The active ingredient in Xifaxan is called rifaximin, an antibiotic that can stop bacteria from multiplying in your gut. When taken as a pill, rifaximin isn’t absorbed easily into your body. This is good, as it means the drug stays in your gut where it can fight bacteria, rather than being absorbed and dispersed around your body. Rifaximin attaches itself to bacteria in a way that stops the bacteria from producing the molecules they need to survive. This stops them from growing, multiplying, and spreading through your stomach and gut.

Xifaxan side effects & drug interactions

Like all drugs, Xifaxan can have side effects, but not everyone will suffer from them or experience the same ones. Side effects with Xifaxan tend to be uncommon and mild. The drug isn’t absorbed very easily into your body, meaning it stays where it’s needed, rather than spreading through your system and causing unwanted effects. The most common side effects of Xifaxan (affecting around 1 in 10 people) are swelling of the lower arms and legs (peripheral edema), headaches, nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and build-up of fluid in the abdomen (ascites).

This isn’t the full list of all side effects Xifaxan can cause. You can find more details on the side effects in the patient leaflet that comes with your medication. If you have any concerns about Xifaxan’s side effects, talk to your physician or a pharmacist.

Xifaxan and other medications can interact, which can change the way the medications work and make side effects more likely. Tell your prescribing physician about all medications you’re taking, including any supplements. Don’t take Xifaxan if you’re taking any of the following:

  • Warfarin
  • CYP3A4 substrates, like Indinavir and Lovastatin
  • P-glycoprotein inhibitors

Xifaxan warnings & precautions

Don’t take Xifaxan if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient rifaximin or any rifamycin antimicrobial agents
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients found in Xifaxan (listed in the leaflet which comes with the medication)
  • Suspect your travelers’ diarrhea is caused by an infection other than E. coli, like Campylobacter, Shigella or Salmonella. Xifaxan may not be effective at tackling these infections. If your symptoms get worse or persist for more than 48 hours, stop taking Xifaxan.
  • Are under 12 years of age if treating travelers’ diarrhea
  • Are under 18 years of age if treating irritable bowel syndrome or hepatic encephalopathy

Talk to your physician before taking Xifaxan if you:

  • Are pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding
  • Have severe hepatic impairment (reduced liver function)

*Qualifying persons may obtain medications directly from patient assistance programs without any out-of-pocket cost (or for less than $49 per medication). However, our monthly flat rate of just $49 per medication spares you the hassle of tracking down the different programs and filling out all the required paperwork for each program.

**If you do not receive medications because you were determined to be ineligible for the prescription assistance by the applicable pharmaceutical companies and you have a letter of denial, we will refund any fees you paid toward medications for which you did not qualify to receive prescription assistance (Refund).

To receive a Refund, you must send the letter of denial to us by fax to 866-262-2603, or by e-mail to [email protected] within 30 days of your receipt of such letter. The Refund is your sole and exclusive remedy for any fees you may wish to dispute.
