What is Xeloda?

Xeloda is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Genetech Inc.

XELODA (capecitabine) is a nucleoside metabolic inhibitor with antineoplastic activity indicated for:

  • Adjuvant colon cancer – patients with Dukes’ C colon cancer
  • Metastatic colorectal cancer – first-line as monotherapy when treatment with fluoropyrimidine therapy alone is preferred
  • Metastatic breast cancer – in combination with docetaxel after the failure of prior anthracycline-containing therapy, or as monotherapy in patients resistant to both paclitaxel and an anthracycline-containing regimen

Patients receiving concomitant Xeloda and oral coumarin-derivative anticoagulants such as warfarin and phenprocoumon should have their anticoagulant response (INR or prothrombin time) monitored frequently in order to adjust the anticoagulant dose accordingly.

Xeloda active ingredients

Xeloda contains capecitabine as the active ingredient. It is classed as an antimetabolite that kills cancer cells by acting as false building blocks in a cancer cell’s genes, causing the cancer cell to die as it gets ready to divide.

Xeloda is in an inactive form when you take it. Your liver, and enzymes in the cancer cells, convert it to its active form, 5-fluorouracil.

Xeloda side effects

The most common side effects of capecitabine in clinical trials include:

  • Diarrhea, constipation
  • Hand-foot syndrome – pain, tenderness, redness, swelling, blistering, or peeling skin on your hands or feet
  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Abdominal pain, loss of appetite
  • Tiredness, weakness
  • Difficulty sleeping

In rare instances, Xeloda can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Coagulopathy – may result in bleeding and death
  • Increased risk of severe or fatal adverse reactions in patients with low or absent dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) activity
  • Dehydration and renal failure
  • Skin reactions – skin rash, blisters, and peeling of your skin
  • Hyperbilirubinemia
  • Hematologic
  • Sores or ulcers in your mouth, redness or swelling of your mouth or tongue, difficulty eating or swallowing
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes)
  • Heart problems – chest pain, irregular heartbeats, swelling in your lower legs, rapid weight gain, feeling lightheaded or short of breath
  • Decreased white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cell counts

Get medical help right away if you notice any symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, such as rash, blisters, peeling, itching, swelling of the face or tongue, sore throat, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing

Xeloda drug interactions

Xeloda can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Anticoagulants (blood thinners)
  • Phenytoin
  • Leucovorin – concentration of 5-fluorouracil is increased and its toxicity may be enhanced by leucovorin
  • CYP2C9 substrates

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Xeloda. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Xeloda contraindications

You should not use Xeloda if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient capecitabine
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Xeloda
  • Severe renal impairment
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – females of reproductive potential are advised to use effective contraception (birth control) during treatment and for 6 months following the last dose

Talk to your doctor about all of your medical conditions before using Xeloda if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Xeloda
  • Are over 65
  • Have hepatic impairment
  • Have renal impairment
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Xeloda generic

Xeloda is the trademark brand name for capecitabine manufactured by Genetech Inc. A generic version of capecitabine is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Xeloda savings through NiceRx.
