What is Viibryd?

Viibryd is an antidepressant that is used to treat major depressive disorder (MDD). Viibryd helps with MDD by increasing levels of serotonin. This is a chemical produced inside your body that influences your thoughts and mood, amongst many other things. Increasing levels of serotonin helps alleviate the symptoms of MDD in many people.

MDD, or depression, is a mental health disorder. It has a range of symptoms, but normally you’re diagnosed with MDD if you have major depressive episodes. These are periods that last at least two weeks where you feel depressed most of the time and your daily life is disrupted. MDD can cause feelings of depression, worthlessness, and guilt. You may experience low energy levels, a lack of interest in activities you previously enjoyed, poor attention, and suicidal thoughts.

Viibryd active ingredients

The active ingredient in Viibryd is called vilazodone; a serotonin modulator that works by increasing the amount of serotonin in your brain. Serotonin is released by nerve cells in your brain. Once released, it interacts with other cells in your brain, influencing your mood, your thoughts, and your emotions. When serotonin is released, it’s either used quickly or reabsorbed into the nerve cell that released it. Vilazodone increases your levels of serotonin by stopping it from being reabsorbed.

Viibryd side effects & drug interactions

As with all medications, Viibryd can cause side effects in some people. Not everyone will get side effects or get the same ones though. The most common side effects of Viibryd in clinical testing were diarrhea and nausea. Other common side effects, felt by between 5% and 10% of patients, included vomiting, dry mouth, dizziness, and insomnia.

In rare instances, Viibryd can cause more serious side effects. In some cases, Viibryd can make some of the symptoms of MDD worse, including a worsening of depressive episodes and an increase in suicidal thoughts. If you take Viibryd and you find you’re thinking more about suicide and your depression feels worse, you should contact a health professional as soon as possible.

Similar to other serotonin modulating antidepressants, Viibryd can cause withdrawal side effects if you stop taking it suddenly. These can include headaches, nausea, vomiting, feeling dizzy, and irritability. Talk to your physician if you’d like to stop taking Viibryd.

Viibryd can interact with other drugs. This can change how Viibryd and other medications work and can make some side effects more likely. Don’t take Viibryd if you’re taking a monoamine oxidase inhibitor medication.

Talk to your physician about the suitability of Viibryd if you’re taking:

  • A central nervous system active agent
  • Any drugs that influence your serotonin system like other antidepressants or tryptophan products
  • Drugs that can increase your risk of bleeding, like Aspirin, Warfarin, or NSAIDs
  • CYP enzyme inhibitors or inducers

Talk to your physician if you’re unsure if you’re taking any of these. You should tell them about all medication you’re taking, including dietary supplements.

Viibryd warnings & precautions
