What is Varizig?

Varizig is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Cangene Corporation, a subsidiary of Emergent BioSolutions Inc., Winnipeg, Canada R3T 5Y3, U.S. License No. 1201.

Varizig (Varicella-Zoster Immune Globulin (Human)) is indicated for post-exposure prophylaxis of varicella-zoster virus (VZV, chickenpox) or herpes zoster in high-risk patients without evidence of immunity for whom varicella vaccine is contraindicated.

High-risk individuals include immunocompromised children and adults, newborns of mothers with varicella shortly before or after delivery, premature infants, infants less than one year of age, adults without evidence of immunity, and pregnant women. Varizig administration is intended to reduce the severity of varicella.

What doses of Varizig are available?

Varizig is available as a lyophilized powder for solution for intramuscular injection. It is available in a single-use vial of 125 IU. Varizig is accompanied by a vial of 8.5 mL of sterile diluent for reconstitution. Each vial of Varizig is reconstituted with 1.25 mL of sterile diluent.

The dosing of Varizig is based on body weight. Administer a single dose of Varizig intramuscularly as recommended.

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends the administration of Varizig as soon as possible after exposure to the varicella-zoster virus, ideally within 96 hours for the greatest effectiveness. The CDC also revised the patient groups recommended by the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to receive VariZIG by extending the period of eligibility for previously recommended premature infants from exposures to varicella-zoster virus during the neonatal period to exposures that occur during the entire period for which they require hospital care for their prematurity. The CDC recommendations for VariZIG use are now in line with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations

Always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
