What is Tecentriq?
Tecentriq is a prescription medication given to adults to treat two types of cancer:
- Urothelial carcinoma
- Non-small-cell lung carcinoma (NSCLC)
It is usually prescribed when your cancer has spread or can’t be removed by surgery. Often when certain types of chemotherapy haven’t worked or can’t be used on you it will be prescribed.
Urothelial carcinoma, sometimes also called transitional cell carcinoma, is a cancer that affects your urinary system. Your urinary system is the parts of your body that eliminate waste through your urine. It includes your bladder, your kidneys, and the tubes that connect them and from which you urinate (ureters and urethra). Urothelial carcinoma is the most common type of bladder, ureter, and urethra cancer; and the second most common kidney cancer. It’s called urothelial carcinoma as the urothelium is a type of tissue inside your urinary system that the cancer usually starts in.
Non-small-cell lung carcinoma is a group of cancers that affect your lungs. They make up around 85% of lung cancers and are the most common type of lung cancer in people who’ve never smoked.
Tecentriq helps treat these cancers by stopping cancerous tumors from protecting themselves from your immune system. This allows your immune system to attack the tumors more effectively. The medication is given through a drip attached to one of your veins (intravenous), usually under the supervision of a doctor or nurse.
Tecentriq active ingredients
Tecentriq’s active ingredient is atezolizumab. This works by helping your immune system to fight your cancer.
Some cancerous tumors produce a substance called programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1). PD-1 is found on the surface of cells, and it stops your immune system from targeting and killing them. Cancerous tumors with PD-1 on the surface are partly protected from your immune system. Atezolizumab attaches to PD-1 and stops it working. This allows your immune system to target the cancerous cells and kill them.
