What is Syprine?

Syprine is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication distributed by Bausch Health US. Syprine is a chelating agent that works by removing heavy metals such as lead, mercury, or copper from the blood.

Wilson’s disease is a genetic defect that causes excess copper to build up in your body. Syprine is used to treat this condition in people who cannot take penicillamine. Unlike penicillamine, Syprine is not recommended in cystinuria or rheumatoid arthritis.

What doses of Syprine are available?

Syprine is available in capsule form, in the following doses: 250 mg.

Syprine should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. Do not drink milk, eat food, or take any other medications for at least 1 hour after you take Syprine. Do not chew, break, or open the capsule.

Call your doctor if you have symptoms of a fever or a skin rash while taking this medicine. You may need to take your temperature every night for the first month of treatment with Syprine. You may need regular blood and urine tests while using Syprine.

Syprine active ingredients

Syprine contains the active ingredient trientine hydrochloride.

Syprine side effects

The most common side effects of Syprine in clinical trials include:

  • Heartburn, stomach pain, loss of appetite
  • Dark, tarry stools
  • Mouth sores
  • Skin flaking, cracking, or thickening

In rare instances, Syprine can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Fever or skin rash
  • Problems with speech, balance, walking, lifting, chewing, or swallowing
  • Muscle pain or stiffness, muscular spasm, myasthenia gravis
  • Double vision
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus – joint pain or swelling, headaches, confusion, chest pain, shortness of breath, skin sores, or numbness, feeling cold, or pale appearance of your fingers or toes
  • Iron-deficiency anemia

Syprine drug interactions

Syprine can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Iron and Syprine each inhibit the absorption of the other – two hours should elapse between administration of Syprine and iron

    It is important that Syprine be taken on an empty stomach, at least one hour before meals or two hours after meals, and at least one hour apart from any other drug, food, or milk. This allows maximum absorption and reduces the chance of inactivation of the drug by metal binding in the gastrointestinal tract

Syprine contraindications

You should not use Syprine if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient trientine
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Syprine

Talk to your doctor before using Syprine if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Syprine
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
  • Have anemia (low red blood cells)
  • Have a liver condition called biliary cirrhosis

Syprine is the trademark brand name for trientine distributed by Bausch Health US. A generic version of trientine is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Syprine savings through NiceRx.
