What is Synthroid?

Synthroid is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by AbbVie, Inc. It is a thyroid medicine that replaces the hormone that would normally be produced by your thyroid gland. Symptoms of low thyroid hormone levels include tiredness, muscle aches, constipation, dry skin, weight gain, slow heartbeat, or sensitivity to cold. Synthroid (levothyroxine sodium) is used:

  • As replacement therapy in primary (thyroidal), secondary (pituitary), and tertiary (hypothalamic) congenital or acquired hypothyroidism
  • Alongside surgery and radioiodine therapy in the management of thyrotropin-dependent well-differentiated thyroid cancer

Synthroid is not recommended for the suppression of benign thyroid nodules and nontoxic diffuse goiter in iodine-sufficient patients, or for treatment of hypothyroidism during the recovery phase of subacute thyroiditis. Synthroid is not for the treatment of obesity or for weight loss. Doses above those required for daily hormonal requirements may produce serious or even life-threatening toxicity.

What doses of Synthroid are available?

Synthroid is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 25, 50, 75, 88, 100, 112, 125, 137, 150, 175, 200, and 300 mcg.

Take Synthroid once daily, on an empty stomach, half to one hour before breakfast. Take Synthroid at least 4 hours before or after drugs that are known to affect absorption. The starting dose will depend on a number of factors, including age, body weight, cardiovascular status, and other medications being taken. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and take your next dose at the normal time.

Always speak with your healthcare provider for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.
