What is Sandimmune?

Sandimmune is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Novartis. Sandimmune belongs to a class of drugs called DMARDs, Immunomodulators; Immunosuppressants; Calcineurin Inhibitors. It is used:

• For the prophylaxis of solid organ transplantation (e.g. heart transplant) to prevent organ rejection
• To treat the symptoms of severe active, rheumatoid arthritis (where the disease has not responded to treatment with methotrexate)
• To treat psoriasis

Sandimmune may be given with adrenal corticosteroids (steroids) but not with other immunosuppressive agents.

• Drugs that may increase potassium levels – potassium supplements
• Potassium-sparing diuretics
• Tacrolimus, bosentan, mifepristone, and St. John’s wort
• Aliskiren, dabigatran, dronedarone, elagolix, coal tar, orlistat
• Digoxin, colchicine, prednisolone, repaglinide, sirolimus
• HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) – atorvastatin, pitavastatin, simvastatin
• Live vaccines – vaccination may be less effective
• Other nephrotoxic drugs – ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, melphalan, amphotericin B, ketoconazole
• CYP3A inhibitors – calcium channel blockers, amiodarone, erythromycin, clarithromycin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, boceprevir, telaprevir, methylprednisolone, allopurinol, bromocriptine, danazol, metoclopramide, imatinib, nefazodone, oral contraceptives
