What is Sandimmune?

Sandimmune is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Novartis. Sandimmune belongs to a class of drugs called DMARDs, Immunomodulators; Immunosuppressants; Calcineurin Inhibitors. It is used:

  • For the prophylaxis of solid organ transplantation (e.g. heart transplant) to prevent organ rejection
  • To treat the symptoms of severe active, rheumatoid arthritis (where the disease has not responded to treatment with methotrexate)
  • To treat psoriasis

Sandimmune may be given with adrenal corticosteroids (steroids) but not with other immunosuppressive agents.

What doses of Sandimmune are available?

Sandimmune is available in capsule, injection, or oral solution form, in the following doses: 25mg.

Sandimmune contains cyclosporine as the active ingredient.

Sandimmune side effects

The most common side effects of Sandimmune in clinical trials include:

  • Headache, dizziness
  • Stomach pain, diarrhea, vomiting
  • Acne
  • Signs of a common cold
  • Arthralgia (joint pain)
  • Leg cramps

In rare instances, Sandimmune can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney problems – difficulty passing urine, blood in the urine, or weight gain
  • Muscle pain or weakness
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Seizures
  • Loss of appetite, ongoing vomiting
  • Unexplained bruising or bleeding
  • Fatigue
  • Liver problems – dark urine, stomach pain, light-colored stools, or yellow skin or eyes
  • Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) – mood changes, confusion
  • Increased risk of infection
  • Lymphoma and other cancers

Signs of an allergic reaction – hives, blistered or peeling skin, wheezing; tightness in the chest or throat, chest pain, unusual hoarseness, or swelling of the mouth, face, lips, tongue, or throat.

Sandimmune drug interactions

Sandimmune can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Other drugs that weaken the immune system and increase the risk of infection – natalizumab, rituximab, tofacitinib
  • Drugs that may increase potassium levels – potassium supplements
  • Potassium-sparing diuretics
  • Tacrolimus, bosentan, mifepristone, and St. John’s wort
  • Aliskiren, dabigatran, dronedarone, elagolix, coal tar, orlistat
  • Digoxin, colchicine, prednisolone, repaglinide, sirolimus
  • HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) – atorvastatin, pitavastatin, simvastatin
  • Live vaccines – vaccination may be less effective
  • Other nephrotoxic drugs – ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, melphalan, amphotericin B, ketoconazole
  • CYP3A inhibitors – calcium channel blockers, amiodarone, erythromycin, clarithromycin, quinupristin/dalfopristin, boceprevir, telaprevir, methylprednisolone, allopurinol, bromocriptine, danazol, metoclopramide, imatinib, nefazodone, oral contraceptives
  • CYP3A inducers – nafcillin, rifampin, carbamazepine, oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, octreotide, sulfinpyrazone, terbinafine, ticlopidine
  • Grapefruit and grapefruit juice

Sandimmune contraindications

You should not use Sandimmune if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient cyclosporine
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Sandimmune
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Talk to your doctor before using Sandimmune if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Sandimmune
  • Have liver disease
  • Have cancer
  • Have kidney problems
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Sandimmune generic

Sandimmune is the trademark brand name for cyclosporine manufactured by Novartis. A generic version of cyclosporine is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Sandimmune savings through NiceRx.
