What is Phoslyra?

Phoslyra is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Lyne Laboratories Brockton, for Fresenius Medical Care. Phoslyra (calcium acetate oral solution) is a phosphate binder indicated as an adjunct to the reduction in dietary intake of phosphate and dialysis to reduce serum phosphorus in patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Patients with ESRD retain phosphorus and can develop hyperphosphatemia. High serum phosphorus can precipitate serum calcium resulting in ectopic calcification. Hyperphosphatemia also plays a role in the development of secondary hyperparathyroidism in patients with ESRD.

What doses of Phoslyra are available?

Phoslyra is available in oral solution form, in the following doses: 667 mg calcium acetate per 5mL.

Phoslyra contains calcium acetate as the active ingredient.

Phoslyra side effects

The most common side effects of Phoslyra in clinical trials include:

  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea with nutritional supplements that contain maltitol

In rare instances, Phoslyra can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Hypercalcemia (high calcium levels) – symptoms include abdominal pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation, confusion, dry mouth, increased thirst, and urination. Reduce or interrupt Phoslyra and Vitamin D. Severe hypercalcemia may require hemodialysis and discontinuation of treatment
  • Serious allergic reactions – rash, itching, swelling (especially of the face, tongue, or throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing

Phoslyra drug interactions

Phoslyra can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Tetracycline antibiotics – doxycycline, minocycline
  • Fluoroquinolones
  • Levothyroxine
  • Calcium channel blockers such as verapamil
  • Calcium supplements
  • Antacids that contain calcium
  • Antibiotics – ciprofloxacin, levofloxacin
  • Digoxin

Phoslyra contraindications

You should not use Phoslyra if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient calcium acetate
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Phoslyra
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Talk to your doctor before using Phoslyra if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Phoslyra
  • Have kidney disease
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Phoslyra generic

Phoslyra is the trademark brand name for calcium acetate manufactured by Lyne Laboratories Brockton, for Fresenius Medical Care. A generic version of calcium acetate is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Phoslyra savings through NiceRx.
