What is Oxtellar XR?

Oxtellar XR contains the prescription medicine oxcarbazepine, which is classed as an anticonvulsant. Oxtellar XR is used on its own or in combination with other medications to treat partial seizures. Oxtellar works by reducing nerve impulses that cause seizures and pain. The Oxtellar XR brand of oxcarbazepine is used with other medicines in adults and children who are at least 6 years old.

Oxtellar XR active ingredients

Exactly how oxcarbazepine works in the body is not fully understood. Studies do show however that oxcarbazepine does block voltage-sensitive sodium channels. This helps to stabilize hyperexcited neural membranes, reduce repetitive neuron firing, and a reduction of synaptic impulses. These actions are thought to be important in the prevention of the spread of seizures in the brain. Studies have shown no interactions of significance of oxcarbazepine with brain receptor sites.

Oxtellar XR extended-release tablets are to be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. The extended-release tablet should be swallowed whole and not crushed, chewed, or broken. Do not stop taking Oxtellar XR suddenly, as this may cause increased seizures.
