What is Onexton?

Onexton is a prescription gel used by adults and children 12 and over to treat acne. It’s a topical gel, which means you apply Onexton directly to your affected skin. This is usually once a day, for up to 12 weeks. The medication contains an antibiotic and a skin treatment called benzoyl peroxide, that helps to clear your skin of sebum (the oil your skin naturally produces) and dead skin cells, reduce inflammation, and kill the bacteria inside your spots. Onexton can reduce the severity of your acne and make outbreaks less likely.

Onexton active ingredients

Onexton has two active ingredients, called clindamycin phosphate and benzoyl peroxide. They work together to clear skin cells and sebum from your follicles, kill the bacteria in your follicles, and reduce inflammation.

Clindamycin phosphate, usually just called clindamycin, is an antibiotic that can kill the bacteria in your spots and reduce inflammation. Clindamycin works by stopping the bacteria in your spots from reproducing by preventing them from copying their DNA (or RNA).

Benzoyl peroxide treats acne in three ways. It reduces how much sebum oil your follicles produce and helps to break down dead skin cells, reducing the chance your follicles will get blocked. It can also help to kill the bacteria in your spots.

Onexton side effects & Onexton drug interactions

The most common side effects caused by Onexton include:

  • A burning sensation in the skin where you apply your Onexton
  • Skin redness
  • Swelling
  • Itching
  • A rash

In rare instances, Onexton can cause more serious side effects, like:

  • Severe allergic reactions to the medication that can cause intense itching and swelling of your face, eyes, lips, tongue or throat, and this swelling can make it difficult to breathe
  • Inflammation of your colon (colitis) that can cause severe stomach cramps, and watery diarrhea or bloody diarrhea

Your doctor will assess the benefits of taking Onexton against your risk of side effects.

Onexton can interact with other medications. This can change how Onexton and the other medications work and can make some side effects more likely. Medications that could interact with Onexton include:

  • Any other products you use on your skin
  • Any topical or oral medications that contain the antibiotic erythromycin
  • Any neuromuscular blocking medications used alongside anesthetics

Onexton warnings & precautions

Onexton can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight and ultraviolet (UV) light. Avoid using UV tanning beds or lamps when taking Onexton. Stay out of strong sun, limit your time in the sun, and use sunscreen on treated skin if you have to be outdoors in the sun.

Avoid getting Onexton on your clothes or in your hair, as Onexton may bleach hair or colored fabrics.

Onexton should not be given to children under 12 years of age. Don’t take Onexton if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient clindamycin phosphate or benzoyl peroxide
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Onexton
  • Have an inflammatory bowel condition, like Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Have ever had inflammation of the colon (colitis) or severe diarrhea caused by past antibiotic use
