What is Namenda?

Namenda is a medication used to treat moderate to severe dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease. Dementia is a brain condition that causes a long-term, and usually gradual, decline in your ability to think and remember clearly. It can also impair your language skills, affect your behavior and your mental health, and cause emotional problems, like becoming more irritable and aggressive.

As a common condition, it affects more than 50 million people around the world, with 10 million new cases each year. It used to be thought that dementia was a normal part of the aging process. However, it’s now understood that dementia is caused by damage to the brain and that it results in a mental deterioration beyond that caused by aging. While dementia can be caused by a range of conditions, between 60% to 70% of cases are thought to be due to Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s is a disease that damages your brain. It’s caused by concentrations of harmful proteins building up inside and outside your brain cells. This damages the cells and makes it difficult for them to communicate with each other. An area of your brain called the hippocampus is often affected first by Alzheimer’s disease. Your hippocampus is involved in learning and memory, which is why memory loss is one of the early signs of Alzheimer’s.

Although most of the changes in your brain caused by Alzheimer’s can’t be reversed, medications can help, particularly with thinking and memory. Namenda can result in improvements in thinking, behavior, mood, and the ability to perform daily tasks in people with moderate to severe dementia.

Namenda active ingredients

The active ingredient in Namenda is called memantine. It’s an anti-dementia medicine that can result in improvements in thinking, mood, and behavior in people with moderate to severe dementia caused by Alzheimer’s disease.

Alzheimer’s causes brain damage that makes it harder for your brain cells (neurons) to communicate with each other. Memantine stimulates the receptors in your brain that are involved in sending signals between your brain cells. It specifically targets receptors involved in learning and memory, countering some of the decline caused by Alzheimer’s.
