If you are eligible for the Kaletra patient assistance program you can receive your medication for free. Our monthly service fee of $49 per medication covers the cost of our services in applying for the program and requesting your ongoing refills on your behalf. If you obtain your Kaletra through NiceRx, you will only pay $49 a month regardless of the retail price of your medication.

Am I eligible for the Kaletra patient assistance program?

You could receive your Kaletra without paying the full retail price if you meet the eligibility criteria for assistance. The eligibility requirements are set by the pharmaceutical companies that are providing assistance programs. How do I apply for Kaletra patient assistance?

What is Kaletra?

Kaletra is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by AbbVie Inc. Kaletra is an HIV-1 protease inhibitor indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients (14 days and older). It contains a combination of lopinavir and ritonavir which are both antiviral medications that prevent the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV infection) from multiplying in your body so your immune system can work better.

What doses of Kaletra are available?

Kaletra is available in:

• Tablet form: 200 mg lopinavir and 50 mg ritonavir, 100 mg lopinavir and 25 mg ritonavir
• Oral solution form: 80 mg lopinavir and 20 mg ritonavir per milliliter

Take Kaletra orally with or without food, usually once or twice daily. Swallow the tablets whole. Do not crush, break or chew the tablets. For children, the dosage is also based on age, weight, and height. Once-daily dosing of this medication is not recommended for children younger than 18 years of age.

Kaletra side effects

The most common side effects of Kaletra in clinical trials include:

• Diarrhea
• Nausea, vomiting
• Hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia

In rare instances, Kaletra can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

• Nausea and vomiting that doesn’t stop, increased thirst, increased urination, dark urine, confusion, loss of appetite, abdominal pain, yellowing of eyes and skin
• Unexplained weight loss, severe fatigue, muscle aches and weakness, severe headaches, joint pain, numbness and tingling of the hands, feet, arms, and legs, changes in vision, signs of infection, signs of an overactive thyroid such as irritability, nervousness, heat intolerance, irregular heartbeat, an unusual growth in the neck, Guillain-Barre syndrome
• Pancreatitis
• Hepatotoxicity
• QT interval prolongation
• PR interval prolongation
• New-onset or exacerbations of diabetes mellitus, hyperglycemia, immune reconstitution syndrome, redistribution or accumulation of body fat
• Total cholesterol and triglycerides elevations
• Hemophilia

Kaletra drug interactions

Kaletra can interact with other medications. These include:

• Certain HIV medicines such as fosamprenavir, tipranavir, didanosine, nevirapine
• Apalutamide, rifampin, St. John’s wort
• Alpha-blockers such as alfuzosin, tamsulosin
• Fluticasone, salmeterol
• Treatments for erectile dysfunction-ED or pulmonary hypertension such as sildenafil, tadalafil
• Ergot drugs such as ergotamine, dihydroergotamine, methylergonovine
• Sedatives such as midazolam, triazolam
• Statins such as lovastatin, atorvastatin, simvastatin
• Antianginal such as ranolazine
• Antifungals such as itraconazole, ketoconazole
• Antiarrhythmics such as amiodarone, dronedarone
• Anti-gout treatments such as colchicine
• Antipsychotics such as lurasidone, pimozide

• GI motility agents such as cisapride
• Hepatitis C direct-acting antivirals such as elbasvir and grazoprevir
• Treatments for seizures such as carbamazepine, phenytoin

Kaletra contraindications

You should not use Kaletra if you:

• Are allergic to the active ingredient lopinavir or ritonavir
• Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Kaletra

• Have liver disease (especially hepatitis B or C)
• Have heart disease, heart rhythm disorder, or a family history of long QT syndrome
• Have pancreas problems
• Have diabetes
• Have low levels of potassium in your blood
• Have a bleeding disorder such as hemophilia

Talk to your doctor before using Kaletra if you:

• Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Kaletra
• Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
• Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
