What is Jalyn?

Jalyn is a medication that’s used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (an enlarged prostate) in men. Jalyn is taken as a capsule that’s swallowed with water.

The prostate is a gland that men have beneath their bladders. It produces substances that mix with your sperm when you ejaculate to create semen. With benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), your prostate gland enlarges for a reason other than cancer. Often, it’s caused by a build-up of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). BPH can make it difficult for you to urinate as the prostate swells and reduces the flow of urine from your bladder. Over time it can lead to urinary tract infections, bladder stones, and chronic kidney problems.

Jalyn helps with BHP in two ways. It relaxes the muscles in and around your prostate, making it easier for you to urinate, easing the symptoms of BHP. It also lowers your levels of DHT, helping to shrink your prostate, addressing the cause of BHP.

Jalyn active ingredients

Jalyn contains two active ingredients, dutasteride, and tamsulosin.

Tamsulosin is an alpha-blocker that relaxes muscles in and around the prostate. It works by binding with and blocking structures on muscles called alpha 1 receptors. This stops the receptors working and causes the muscle tissue to relax, increasing flow from your bladder and making it easier to urinate.

Dutasteride is a type of drug called a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It helps reduce the amount of DHT your body produces (DHT is a hormone that can make your prostate enlarged). DHT is converted from testosterone by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Dutasteride binds with 5-alpha reductase and stops it working. This can cause your enlarged prostate to shrink.

Jalyn side effects & Jalyn drug interactions

The most common side effects Jalyn can cause occur in around 1 in 10 people who take it. They include dizziness, breast enlargement or tenderness (gynecomastia), a decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction (impotence), a decrease in the amount of semen produced when ejaculating, and a difficulty reaching ejaculation.

In some instances there are more serious side effects associated with Jalyn. These can include allergic reactions to the medication, heart failure, a serious skin reaction called Stevens-Johnson syndrome, hair loss, an increased risk of some forms of prostate cancer, and a persistent and painful erection (priapism).

Medicines that may interact with Jalyn include:

  • Other alpha-blockers
  • Ritonavir or indinavir, for HIV
  • PDE5 inhibitors used to treat erectile dysfunction, like vardenafil, sildenafil, and tadalafil
  • Verapamil or diltiazem, for high blood pressure
  • Ketoconazole, terbinafine, or itraconazole, used to treat fungal infections
  • The antidepressants nefazodone or paroxetine
  • Cimetidine, for stomach ulcers
  • Warfarin, for blood clotting
  • Erythromycin, an antibiotic
  • Diclofenac used to treat pain and inflammation

Make sure you tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking. As well as those mentioned above, let them know about any vitamins or dietary supplements you take. If you’re unsure, take the packaging of all your medications and supplements with you when you see your physician.
