What is Idamycin?

Idamycin is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Pfizer Inc. It belongs to a class of drugs called antineoplastics, anthracycline. Idamycin PFS is used in combination with chemotherapy to treat acute myeloid leukemia (AML), a type of blood cancer.

What doses of Idamycin are available?

Idamycin is available in injection form, in the following doses: 1mg in 1mL

Idamycin PFS is given as an infusion into a vein. You may be given other medications to prevent nausea, vomiting, or infections. Tell your caregivers if you feel any burning, pain, or swelling around the needle when Idamycin PFS is injected.

If any of this medication gets on your skin, wash it thoroughly with soap and warm water. Use Idarubicin as directed on the prescription label, and always speak with a healthcare professional for medical advice about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Idamycin side effects

The most common side effects of Idamycin in clinical trials include:

  • Nausea, vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps, diarrhea
  • Mouth sores
  • Bleeding
  • Headache
  • Rash
  • Alopecia (hair loss)

In rare instances, Idamycin can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Myocardial toxicity leading to congestive heart failure
  • Increased risk of bleeding or signs of infection (fever, chills, tiredness)
  • Chest pain, irregular heartbeats, shortness of breath, swelling, or rapid weight gain
  • Feeling light-headed, or having difficulty breathing
  • Pain, blisters, bleeding, or severe rash on the palms of your hands or the soles of your feet

Idamycin drug interactions

Idamycin can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Cyclophosphamide
  • Paclitaxel
  • Trastuzumab

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Idamycin. Tell your healthcare provider about any over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications that you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take.

Idamycin contraindications

You should not use Idamycin if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient idarubicin hydrochloride
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Idamycin
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Talk to your doctor before using Idamycin if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Idamycin
  • Are over 60
  • Have heart disease
  • Have had radiation treatment to the chest area
  • Have any infections
  • Have anemia (low red blood cells)
  • Are having chemotherapy with doxorubicin, daunorubicin, or epirubicin
  • Have bone marrow suppression
  • Have liver or kidney disease
  • Have gout
  • Have sepsis (a severe reaction to an infection)
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Idamycin generic

Idamycin is the trademark brand name for idarubicin hydrochloride manufactured by Pfizer Inc. A generic version of idarubicin hydrochloride is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Idamycin savings through NiceRx.
