How it works

  • Enroll online

Get started by filling out the online enrollment application to find out if you are eligible for assistance.

  • Pre-qualification

NiceRx verifies your eligibility for medication assistance and notifies you if you are pre-qualified. The pharmaceutical company provides your medication for free, and you only pay our service fee.

  • Submit documents

We will request documents to be submitted by you and your healthcare provider that are required by the pharmaceutical company to complete your enrollment.

  • Receive medication

Once approved, the pharmaceutical company typically ships a 90-day supply of medication to your home or healthcare provider’s address. Final acceptance is determined by the pharmaceutical company.

What is Halaven?

Halaven is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication distributed by Eisai Inc. Halaven is an anti-cancer, microtubule inhibitor used for the treatment of patients with metastatic breast cancer (cancer that has spread to other parts of the body) who have previously received at least two chemotherapeutic regimens for the treatment of metastatic disease. Chemotherapy regimens should have included an anthracycline and a taxane in either the adjuvant or metastatic setting.

Halaven is also indicated for the treatment of patients with unresectable or metastatic liposarcoma who have received a prior therapy of anthracycline-containing regimen.

What doses of Halaven are available?

Halaven is available in injection form, in the following doses: 1 mg per 2 mL (0.5 mg per mL vials).

The recommended dose of Halaven is 1.4 mg/m2 intravenously over 2 to 5 minutes on Days 1 and 8 of a 21-day cycle. Reduce the dose in patients with hepatic impairment and moderate renal impairment.

Always speak with a health care professional for medical advice or about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Halaven active ingredients

Eribulin mesylate is a synthetic analog of halichondrin B, a product isolated from the marine sponge Halichondria okadai. Eribulin is a microtubule dynamics inhibitor of the growth phase of microtubules, without affecting the shortening phase and sequesters tubulin into nonproductive aggregates.

Eribulin exerts its mechanism of action via a tubulin-based antimitotic mechanism leading to G2/M cell-cycle block, disruption of mitotic spindles, and, ultimately, apoptotic cell death after prolonged mitotic blockage. Eribulin treatment of human breast cancer cells caused changes in morphology and gene expression as well as decreased migration and invasiveness in vitro.

Halaven side effects

The most common side effects of Halaven in clinical trials include:

  • Anemia (low red blood cells)
  • Reduced platelets
  • Asthenia/tiredness
  • Alopecia (hair loss)
  • Nausea

In rare instances, Halaven can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Neutropenia (low white blood cell count)
  • Peripheral Neuropathy – obtain complete blood cell counts prior to each dose
  • QT Prolongation – your healthcare provider may do an ECG (electrocardiogram) or blood tests during your treatment to check for heart problems
  • Pyrexia

Your doctor will assess the benefits of using Halaven against your risk of side effects. Patients are encouraged to report negative side effects or adverse reactions of Halaven to the FDA. Visit www.fda.gov/medwatch, or call 1-800-FDA-1088.

Halaven drug interactions

No drug-drug interactions are expected with CYP3A4 inhibitors or P-gp inhibitors. Eribulin does not inhibit CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, CYP2D6, CYP2E1, or CYP3A4 enzymes or induce CYP1A2, CYP2C9, CYP2C19, or CYP3A4 enzymes. Eribulin is not expected to alter the plasma concentrations of drugs that are substrates of these enzymes.

Halaven contraindications

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient eribulin mesylate
