Am I eligible for Glucagon patient assistance?

We review each Glucagon enrollment application individually to determine if you are eligible. Each assistance program has its own eligibility criteria and the factors considered by most programs are:

  • I am a permanent, legal resident of the United States or Puerto Rico
  • I am uninsured or my insurance doesn’t cover my medication
  • I meet certain income eligibility requirements

How do I apply for the Glucagon patient assistance program?

Our process makes it as easy as possible to apply for the Glucagon patient assistance program. Begin by completing the enrollment application form on our website. Tell us about any medications that you are taking, including Glucagon. You must also provide details about your healthcare provider, your insurance plan, and your household income. This is required by the pharmaceutical manufacturers who will supply the medication, so it is important to make sure this information is accurate and up to date.

We will review the information that you have provided to determine whether you are eligible for patient assistance. If we can pre-qualify you for assistance, NiceRx will handle the full enrollment process on your behalf. If you are approved by the pharmaceutical company, you will typically start receiving your medication in 6 – 8 weeks.

What is Glucagon?

Glucagon for injection is used for diagnostic purposes during radiologic examinations, by temporarily slowing the movement of the gastrointestinal tract.

Glucagon is a hormone that increases blood sugar levels, however it is not indicated for the emergency treatment of hypoglycemia (low blood sugar levels) because it does not come packaged with a syringe or the liquid needed to prepare it in an emergency.

Glucagon is available as an auto-injector, prefilled syringe, or injection vial.

Glucagon active ingredients

Glucagon is a natural hormone produced by alpha cells in the pancreas in your body. Glucagon stimulates the production of glucose in the liver when you have low blood sugar levels (hypoglycemia), this leads to an increase in your blood sugar level.

Outside of the liver, glucagon also causes the smooth muscle in the lining of the stomach, small bowel, and colon to relax. This has the effect of slowing the movement of the gastrointestinal tract.

Glucagon side effects

The most common side effects caused by glucagon include:

  • Nausea – feeling sick
  • Vomiting
  • Stomach pain
  • Skin reaction where the injection was given

In rarer instances glucagon can cause more serious side effects. These include:

  • Anxiety
  • Blurred vision
  • Coma
  • Confusion
  • Depression
  • Fast heart rate
  • Seizures
  • Slurred speech

Glucagon drug interactions

Glucagon can interact with other medications which can affect your blood sugar. Some medicines can make it harder to tell when your blood sugar level is low. When this occurs it can change how glucagon and the other medications work. It can also make some side effects more likely. Tell your prescribing doctor about all drugs you are taking, particularly:

  • Acebutolol, atenolol, betaxolol, bisoprolol, carvedilol, labetalol, metoprolol, pindolol, propranolol, sotalol, timolol – treatment for high blood pressure
  • Indomethacin – a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory pain killer
  • Warfarin – a blood thinner
