What is Gardasil?

Gardasil is a vaccine used to prevent Human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, and 58 that cause cervical cancer, vaginal and vulvar cancers, anal cancer, and genital warts. Gardasil 9 will not stop diseases caused by other types of HPV. Gardasil may be used alone or with other medications.

Gardasil 9 vaccine is used in girls and women ages 9 to 45 to prevent cervical, vaginal and anal cancers, or genital warts caused by certain types of HPV. Gardasil 9 vaccine is also used in boys and men ages 9 to 45 to prevent anal cancer or genital warts caused by certain types of HPV. You may still receive Gardasil 9 even if you have already had genital warts, or had a positive HPV test or an abnormal pap smear in the past. Gardasil will not work against an active genital warts breakout or HPV-related cancers, and it is not a cure for HPV infection.

It is recommended by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that the HPV vaccine should be given to all boys and girls ages 11 or 12 years old. The vaccine is also recommended in teenage boys and girls who have not already had the vaccine or have not completed all their booster shots.

Gardasil 9 may not provide protection from all diseases in every person.

Gardasil active ingredients

HPV vaccines like other vaccines stimulate the body to produce antibodies that in future encounters with HPV attach themselves to the virus and prevent it from infecting cells.

HPV vaccines are based on virus-like particles (VLPs) that are formed from the surface material of HPV’s. The VLPs are not infectious because they lack the virus’s DNA. They do however closely match the real virus. The antibodies produced against the VLPs are also active against the real virus. The VLPs have been found to influence the production of high levels of antibody by the body, making the vaccines highly effective.

Gardasil side effects

The most common side effects caused by Gardasil include:

• Reaction where the shot was given
• Headache
• Nausea (feeling sick)
• Dizziness
• Fever

In rarer instances, Gardasil can cause more serious side effects. When these occur, they may include:

• Signs of an allergic reaction – difficulty breathing, tightness in the chest, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat, hives, fast heart rate, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhea
• Feeling faint or lightheaded, some people may have seizure-like reactions to this vaccine.

Your doctor may want to keep you under observation for the first 15 minutes after the injection.

Gardasil drug interactions

Gardasil can interact with other medications, particularly:

• Abemaciclib, palbociclib, ribociclib – treatment for breast cancer
• Bleomycin, dactinomycin, mitomycin – treatment of cancer
• Satralizumab, risankizumab, ocrelizumab, daclizumab – monoclonal antibodies
• Fludrocortisone, hydrocortisone, prednisolone – corticosteroids

This list is not exhaustive and other drugs may interact with Gardasil.

Gardasil warning and precautions

Gardasil is not suitable for everyone. Do not take Gardasil if you:

• Are allergic to the active ingredient Gardasil
• Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Gardasil
• Are under 9 years of age

Talk to your doctor before taking Gardasil if you:

• Have an allergy to yeast, polysorbate 80, or other vaccines
• Have a weak immune system caused by HIV or cancer
• Are being treated with steroids or any other medicine that could weaken your immune system
• Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Gardasil
• Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
• Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
