What is Focalin XR?

Focalin XR is a medication prescribed to adults and children six years and older to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a condition that causes your brain to develop differently during your childhood and adolescence. These differences can affect your brain activity and cause problems with paying attention and impulse control, give you excess energy, and create difficulties with controlling your emotions.

ADHD can’t be cured, but it can be managed with treatments that reduce symptoms. You take Focalin XR as a tablet you swallow, usually once a day in the morning. If taken regularly, it can increase your attention and reduce impulsiveness, hyperactivity, and other symptoms. You’ll likely see the best results if Focalin XR is included in a holistic treatment program that includes counseling and other therapies alongside medication.

Focalin XR active ingredients

The active ingredient in Focalin XR is called dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride. It’s a central nervous system stimulant that increases activity in certain regions of your brain. It works by increasing the concentration of natural chemicals in your brain called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters allow your brain cells to communicate with each other and they regulate areas of brain activity.

Dexmethylphenidate hydrochloride increases concentrations of neurotransmitters called dopamine and norepinephrine. They help regulate areas of the brain involved with motivation, reward, memory, attention, amongst others. This has been shown to improve attention and reduced impulsivity and alleviate other symptoms of ADHD.
