What is Eylea?

Eylea is a prescription medication given to adults to treat a range of eye conditions, including:

  1. Neovascular age-related wet macular degeneration
  2. Macular edema following retinal vein occlusion
  3. Diabetic macular edema
  4. Diabetic retinopathy

The above conditions all cause damage to the blood vessels in your retina, an area at the back of your eye that’s involved in vision. Each condition causes damage to the retina that primarily affects the central part of your field of vision. This can cause blurring, vitreous floaters, loss of color, and total central vision loss over time. Although these conditions usually don’t cause a total loss of all vision, loss of central vision can make it hard to read, drive, see faces properly, and perform the day-to-day tasks of your life.

If you have one of the above conditions, your physician may have prescribed Eylea to you. It helps to prevent the growth of unwanted blood vessels in your retina and can reduce fluid buildup and swelling (edema) in your retina, helping to slow or prevent damage and central vision loss.

You take Eylea by having it injected into your eye (ophthalmic intravitreal injection) by a qualified physician, typically once every four weeks. Your physician will decide how often and what dose of Eylea you need based on your condition and medical history.

Eylea active ingredients

The active ingredient in Eylea is called aflibercept. It’s a type of medication called a vascular endothelial growth factor inhibitor that can stop the growth of new blood vessels in your retina and reduce the buildup of fluid.

When you take Eylea, the aflibercept it contains blocks a substance called vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) that causes new blood vessels to be created. By blocking VEGF in your retina, aflibercept stops unwanted blood vessels being formed, and also reduces fluid buildup in your retina, limiting and preventing any damage from occurring to your retina.

Eylea side effects

The most common side effects caused by Eylea include:

  • Eye pain
  • Cataracts – a clouding of the front of the eye caused by a buildup of proteins
  • An increase in pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure)
  • Conjunctival hemorrhage – spots of blood on the white part of the eye
  • Vitreous floaters – shapes floating across your vision
  • Vitreous detachment – part of the eye separating from the retina (that usually doesn’t cause permanent damage)

In rare instances, Eylea can cause more serious side effects. These include:

  • Retinal detachment – where the retina detaches from the back of the eye. If untreated, this can lead to permanent damage and blindness
  • Increases in pressure inside the eye (intraocular pressure) to a degree that can cause glaucoma and can damage your vision
  • Arterial embolism – a serious condition where a blockage in an artery (usually a blood clot) reduces the flow of blood to one or more organs that can cause permanent organ damage

Your doctor will assess the benefits of taking Eylea against your risk of side effects.

Eylea drug interactions

Medications can interact with each other, altering how they work and making some side effects more likely. Tell your prescribing doctor about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins, and herbal and dietary supplements, particularly any products you put into your eyes.

Eylea warning and precautions

Eylea isn’t suitable for everyone. Don’t take Eylea if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient aflibercept
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Eylea
  • Currently have an eye infection
  • Currently have any eye inflammation
  • Are under 18 years of age

Talk to your doctor before taking Eylea if you:

  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
