What is Eliquis prescribed for?

Eliquis is prescribed to patients with atrial fibrillation. It helps to prevent blood clotting which in turn increases the risk of stroke.

In the US, Eliquis is also prescribed to deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Eliquis is also prescribed to reduce the risk of blood clots after knee and hip replacement surgeries.

Active Ingredient

Apixaban is the active ingredient of Eliquis. Apixaban a substance which blocks certain blood proteins and helps to prevent blood clots from forming. Eliquis generic is not yet available.

Conditions treated by Eliquis

Deep Vein Thrombosis

Deep vein thrombosis is a serious condition in which a blood clot forms in the deep veins in the body. Blood clots usually form in the legs, causing pain or swelling. They can travel to other parts in the body, causing serious complications like pulmonary embolism.

Pulmonary Embolism

Pulmonary embolism is a serious condition which often occurs as a complication of deep vein thrombosis. It is caused by blockage in the arteries of the lung. Symptoms include sudden shortness of breath, chest pain that gets worse as the patient inhales, dizziness, and fainting. Some patients may cough up blood or develop a rapid pulse.

Due to low levels of oxygen in the body, patients should seek immediate medical attention to prevent damage to the lungs or other organs. In some cases, pulmonary embolism can cause death.

Atrial Fibrillation

Though it is not life threatening, atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat that can cause serious medical complications. People with atrial fibrillation experience episodes in which the heart’s two upper chambers beat irregularly. Symptoms include a racing sensation in the heart, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, confusion, and chest pain. While Eliquis is not a cure for this condition, it helps to manage the increased possibility of blood clots.

Blood Clot Prevention after Knee or Hip Replacement

During the ten days after knee or hip replacement surgery, patients face an increased risk of developing blood clots. The risk remains during the first three months after surgery, so patients are often prescribed compression stockings and drugs that prevent blood clotting.

*Qualifying persons may obtain medications directly from patient assistance programs without any out-of-pocket cost (or for less than $49 per medication). Enrollees enjoy a full-service solution, as Prescription Care assists them and their physicians with the entire process. We prepare all required documents for the physician to sign, help enrollees manage all prescription refills, monitor eligibility criteria, and maintain enrollment.

**If you do not receive medications because you were determined to be ineligible for the prescription assistance by the applicable pharmaceutical companies and you have a letter of denial, we will refund any fees you paid toward medications for which you did not qualify to receive prescription assistance (Refund).

To receive a Refund, you must send the letter of denial to us by fax to 866-262-2603, or by e-mail to [email protected] within 30 days of your receipt of such letter. The Refund is your sole and exclusive remedy for any fees you may wish to dispute.
