What is Dulera?

Dulera is a medication used to manage the symptoms of asthma, prescribed to adults and children aged 12 and over. The medication is suitable for people with asthma that is not managed well enough by inhaling corticosteroids alone, and who need both a corticosteroid and a bronchodilator.

Asthma is an inflammatory disease that can make your lungs and airways become inflamed and narrowed. This can cause you to cough and wheeze, and make your chest tighten, resulting in it becoming difficult for you to breathe.

Dulera treats asthma by reducing inflammation in the lungs and airways, and by relaxing and opening up your airways. This helps you to breathe and gives relief from the other symptoms of asthma. You should use Dulera on a regular basis, usually twice a day, to manage symptoms over the long term. Please note that it’s not suitable for sudden onsets of symptoms (an asthma attack). A separate rescue inhaler should be used in these instances.

Dulera active ingredients

Dulera has two active ingredients, mometasone, and formoterol. They’re inhaled together into your airways and lungs using a single inhaler. Mometasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in your lungs and airways. Formoterol is a bronchodilator; a medication that opens up your airways. When used together on a regular basis, they help reduce the symptoms of asthma.

Dulera side effects & drug interactions

Dulera can have side effects, although not all people will suffer from them, or experience the same ones. The most common Dulera side effects include headaches, and inflammation of the nose, throat, and sinuses. Other side effects can include thrush infections in the mouth and throat, falls in blood sugar and blood potassium levels, reduced adrenal function, and a greater chance of catching infections.

These aren’t all the side effects that Dulera can cause. You can find more details on possible side effects in the patient leaflet that comes with your medication. For any concerns about Dulera’s side effects, talk to your physician or a pharmacist.

Dulera can interact with other medications, changing how they work, and even increasing the chances of side effects.  Tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking, including vitamins and dietary supplements, specifically:

  • Strong CYP3A4 inhibitors, like ketoconazole or ritonavir
  • Adrenergic drugs
  • Diuretics
  • Xanthine derivatives
  • Beta-blockers
  • Antidepressants
  • Immunosuppressants
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors

Talk to your physician if you’re unsure if you’re taking any of these.

  • Are allergic to the active ingredients mometasone or formoterol
