What is Cytovene?

Cytovene is an antiviral nucleoside analogue cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA polymerase inhibitor indicated for the:

  • Treatment of CMV retinitis in adult patients with compromised immune systems, including patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)
  • Prevention of CMV disease in adult organ transplant recipients at risk for CMV infection

The safety and efficacy of Cytovene-IV have not been established in pediatric patients.

What doses of Cytovene are available?

Cytovene is available in injection form, in the following doses: 500 mg ganciclovir in 250 mL (2 mg per mL) solution in a single dose bag for intravenous use.

Cytovene active ingredients

The active ingredient of Cytovene is ganciclovir sodium.

Cytovene side effects

The most common side effects of Cytovene in clinical trials include:

  • Fever
  • Leukopenia, anemia
  • Catheter-related events (including catheter infection and catheter sepsis)
  • Elevated creatinine levels
  • Gastrointestinal disorders – diarrhea, abdominal pain
  • Dizziness, drowsiness, unsteadiness, tremors
  • Pain, redness, irritation at the injection site

In rare instances, Cytovene can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Hematologic toxicity (decreased bone marrow function) – granulocytopenia (neutropenia), anemia, thrombocytopenia, and pancytopenia. Monitor with frequent complete blood and platelet counts
  • Impairment of renal function – increased serum creatinine levels. Monitor renal function during therapy, particularly in elderly patients and in patients taking other nephrotoxic drugs. Reduce dosage in patients with renal impairment
  • Impairment of fertility
  • Fetal toxicity and teratogenicity – based on animal data, ganciclovir has the potential to cause birth defects in humans
  • Mutagenicity and carcinogenicity

Cytovene drug interactions

Cytovene can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Didanosine – monitor for didanosine toxicity
  • Zidovudine – potential to cause neutropenia and anemia. Monitor with frequent tests of white blood cell counts with differential and hemoglobin levels
  • Probenecid – ganciclovir dose may need to be reduced
  • Imipenem-cilastatin – generalized seizures have been reported
  • Cyclosporine or amphotericin
  • Drugs such as dapsone, pentamidine, flucytosine, vincristine, vinblastine, adriamycin, amphotericin B, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole combinations or other nucleoside analogues should only be considered for concomitant use with ganciclovir if the potential benefits outweigh the risks

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Cytovene.

Cytovene contraindications

You should not use Cytovene if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient ganciclovir sodium
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Cytovene
  • Have hypersensitivity to ganciclovir, valganciclovir or acyclovir
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – it is unknown if this medication passes into breast milk.

Talk to your doctor before using Cytovene if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Cytovene
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant

Cytovene generic

Cytovene is the trademark brand name. A generic version of ganciclovir is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Cytovene savings through NiceRx.
