What is Cytotec?

Cytotec is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Searle. Cytotec reduces acid secretion in the stomach helping to prevent stomach ulcers and protect the stomach from damage caused by taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, and meloxicam. Cytotec is not recommended to reduce the risk of duodenal ulcers in patients taking NSAIDs.

Cytotec is also used in combination with mifepristone as part of an abortion pill to end a pregnancy.

What doses of Cytotec are available?

Cytotec is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 100 mcg.

Cytotec side effects

The most common side effects of Cytotec in clinical trials include:

  • Diarrhea, constipation
  • Abdominal pain, nausea, upset stomach, flatulence
  • Vaginal bleeding or heavy menstrual flow
  • Menstrual cramps

In rare instances, Cytotec can cause more serious adverse effects. These can include:

  • Birth defects
  • Premature birth
  • Uterine rupture
  • Miscarriage, incomplete miscarriage, and dangerous uterine bleeding
  • Severe ongoing stomach discomfort or diarrhea
  • Dehydration

Cytotec drug interactions

Cytotec can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Antacids containing magnesium may make diarrhea worse
  • Oxytocin

Cytotec contraindications

You should not use Cytotec if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient misoprostol or other prostaglandins
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Cytotec
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – Cytotec should not be taken by a pregnant woman. You will need to have a negative pregnancy test before starting this treatment and also need to use effective contraception to prevent pregnancy while you are using this medicine, and for at least 1 month after your last dose

Talk to your doctor before using Cytotec if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Cytotec
  • Have inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, or other intestinal problems
  • Have heart disease
  • Are dehydrated
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed – It is not known whether misoprostol passes into breast milk

Cytotec generic

Cytotec is the trademark brand name for misoprostol manufactured by Searle a division of Pfizer. A generic version of misoprostol is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Cytotec savings through NiceRx.
