What is Colestid?

Colestid is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication distributed by Pharmacia & Upjohn Company, Division of Pfizer Inc. It is a bile acid sequestrant that works by binding to bile acid in your intestines. Colestid is used as a blood cholesterol-lowering drug, specifically LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol. Reducing your LDL cholesterol reduces your risk of heart attacks, stroke, and circulation problems. Lowering high cholesterol levels also helps to prevent heart disease and arteriosclerosis.

What doses of Colestid are available?

Colestid is available as Colestid tablets, in the following doses: 1 gram, and as Colestid granules, in the following doses: 5 grams.

Colestid active ingredients

Colestid contains colestipol hydrochloride (colestipol HCl) as the active ingredient.

Colestid side effects

The most common side effects of Colestid in clinical trials include:

  • Constipation
  • Hemorrhoids

In rare instances, Colestid can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Severe constipation, abdominal pain, bloating
  • Black, bloody, or tarry stools
  • Chest pain, unusual bleeding or bruising, rapid breathing, confusion
  • Increase in triglycerides

Colestid drug interactions

Colestid can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Tetracycline
  • Furosemide
  • Penicillin G
  • Hydrochlorothiazide
  • Gemfibrozil
  • Warfarin
  • Mycophenolate
  • Raloxifene

Colestid can interfere with the absorption of certain nutrients such as folic acid, and fat-soluble vitamins including A, D, E, and K). Your caregiver may request you to take a multivitamin supplement.

Colestid contraindications

You should not use Colestid if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient colestipol
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Colestid
  • Are younger than 18 years old

Talk to your doctor before using Colestid if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Colestid
  • Have problems swallowing
  • Have constipation or hemorrhoids
  • Have a stomach or digestive disorder
  • Have liver disease
  • Have a thyroid or bleeding disorder
  • Have a vitamin A, D, E, or K deficiency
  • Have phenylketonuria (PKU)
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Colestid generic

Colestid is the trademark brand name for colestipol distributed by Pharmacia & Upjohn Company, Division of Pfizer Inc. A generic version of colestipol is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Colestid savings through NiceRx.
