What is Colcrys?

Colcrys is a prescription medicine used to treat gout in adults and familial Mediterranean fever (FMF) in adults and children aged 4 and older.

If you have gout or FMF, your doctor may have prescribed Colcrys to you. It’s a medication that eases the inflammation and pain caused by your condition, and it can make your gout or FMF attacks less frequent and less severe. You take Colcrys as a tablet that you swallow.

Colcrys active ingredients

The active ingredient in Colcrys is called colchicine. It’s a drug that can reduce inflammation and pain caused by gout and FMF. Inflammation is a natural response triggered by your immune system to help you clear infections and heal damaged tissue. However, sometimes inflammation is triggered in healthy tissue causing pain and damage, as happens with gout and FMF attacks.

Colcrys helps to reduce this inflammation. The active ingredient colchicine enters the white blood cells your immune system uses to trigger inflammation, stopping them from working as effectively. This reduces your inflammation, easing your symptoms and making future attacks less likely and less severe.

Colcrys side effects & Colcrys drug interactions

The most common side effects caused by Colcrys, which affect around 1 in 10 people who take it, include nausea (feeling sick), vomiting (being sick), stomach pain, and diarrhea.

In rare instances, Colcrys can cause more serious side effects, such as:

  • Severe allergic reactions to the medication
  • Low white blood cell counts can make you more susceptible to contracting infections
  • Rhabdomyolysis, a serious condition that causes your muscles to break down, and that can lead to kidney failure and death
  • Overdoses, where people have too much Colcrys in their body that can cause organ failure and death
  • Infertility in men (this is usually reversed when men stop taking Colcrys)

Your doctor will assess the benefits of taking Colcrys against your risk of side effects. Colcrys can also interact with other medications. It’s especially important to tell your doctor if you’re taking:

  • Any antiretroviral medications to treat HIV/AIDS, including:
    • Atazanavir sulfate (Reyataz)
    • Darunavir (Prezista)
