Am I eligible for Coartem patient assistance?

We review each Coartem enrollment application individually to determine if you are eligible. Each assistance program has its own eligibility criteria and the factors considered by most programs are:

  • I am a permanent, legal resident of the United States or Puerto Rico
  • I am uninsured or my insurance doesn’t cover my medication
  • I meet certain income eligibility requirements

How do I apply for the Coartem patient assistance program?

Our process makes it as easy as possible to apply for the Coartem patient assistance program. Begin by completing the enrollment application form on our website. Tell us about any medications that you are taking, including Coartem. You must also provide details about your healthcare provider, your insurance plan, and your household income. This is required by the pharmaceutical manufacturers who will supply the medication, so it is important to make sure this information is accurate and up to date.

We will review the information that you have provided to determine whether you are eligible for patient assistance. If we can pre-qualify you for assistance, NiceRx will handle the full enrollment process on your behalf. If you are approved by the pharmaceutical company, you will typically start receiving your medication in 6 – 8 weeks.

What is Coartem?

Coartem contains the prescription medicines artemether and lumefantrine. Artemether and lumefantrine are classed as antimalarial treatments that stop the growth of parasites in the red blood cells of the human body. Malaria is caused by parasites entering the body through the bite of mosquitoes. Malaria is common in areas such as Africa, South America, and Southern Asia.

Coartem is used to treat non-severe malaria in patients at least 2 months old, weighing 5 kg or more. Coartem is seen to be effective in geographical areas where chloroquine is not effective against malaria. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines. Coartem is used only to treat malaria, not to prevent it.

Coartem active ingredients

Coartem tablets contain artemether and lumefantrine in a ratio of 1:6 parts. Artemether is changed chemically in the body into a more active version of itself. The antimalarial action of artemether and its chemically more active version has been shown to be due to endoperoxide moiety. Exactly how lumefantrine works as an antimalarial is not fully understood. However, artemether and lumefantrine have both been shown to block the production of protein and nucleic acid.

You should take Coartem exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Take Coartem with food, milk, pudding, oatmeal, or broth. You can crush and mix the tablet with 1 or 2 teaspoons of water to allow it to be swallowed more easily. For a young child, you can crush and mix the tablet with infant formula. Eating normally as soon as possible helps your body to absorb the medication better. If you are sick (vomit) within 1 hour after taking this medication you should take another dose. If you continue vomiting or you cannot eat, speak to your doctor. Coartem is usually given in 6 doses over 3 days. The dose you take is based on your weight and age. It is important to note that no medicine is 100% effective in treating malaria.
