What is Ciprodex?

Ciprodex is a prescription medication given to adults and children 6 months of age and over to treat bacterial ear infections, specifically:

  1. Acute otitis externa, an outer ear canal bacterial infection
  2. Acute otitis media, a painful type bacterial ear infection, it occurs when the area behind the eardrum called the middle ear becomes inflamed and infected.

Otitis means an infection of the ear that causes inflammation. Acute otitis is an ear infection that comes on quickly, but that gets better with treatment. If you have an acute ear infection, it is usually dived into one of two categories, otitis externa or otitis media. If you or your child have an acute ear infection, your doctor may have prescribed Ciprodex. It is a dual-acting medication that can help clear the bacterial infection and reduce inflammation in your ear, easing the symptoms. These include pain, pressure and hearing loss.

You take Ciprodex by dropping it into your ear using the dropper bottle it comes in. You typically use Ciprodex twice daily, but your Doctor will tell you how often and for how long. Always use your Ciprodex exactly as directed by your prescribing Doctor.

Ciprodex active ingredients

Ciprodex contains two active ingredients called ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone. They work together to clear the bacterial infection from your ear as well as reducing inflammation.

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that treats the bacteria that commonly infects your outer and inner ear. It works by stopping the bacteria from reproducing and slowing how quickly the bacteria spreads, making it easier for your immune system to clear the infection.

Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid medication that reduces inflammation. When you drop Ciprodex into your ear, the dexamethasone attaches to the outside of cells at sites called glucocorticoid receptors. This stimulates the receptors, which sets off processes within the cells that reduce inflammation.

Ciprodex side effects

The most common side effects caused by Ciprodex include:

  • Discomfort in your ear
  • Itching in your ear
  • Pain in your ear

In rare instances Ciprodex can cause more serious side effects. These include severe allergic reactions to the medication that can cause dizziness, a rapid heartbeat, rashes, itching and hives. You may also experience swelling in your face, mouth and throat that can cause breathing difficulties

Your Doctor will assess the benefits of taking Ciprodex against your risk of side effects.

Ciprodex drug interactions

Ciprodex can interact with other medications. Tell your prescribing Doctor about all drugs you are taking, including vitamins, herbal and dietary supplements, also:

  • Any other products you put in your ear
  • Any other medications that contain a corticosteroid or other form of steroid
