What is Ciprodex?
Ciprodex is a prescription medication used to treat a bacterial infection called acute otitis externa. It’s prescribed to adults and children over six months of age, including people who have had a tympanostomy (a tube in the middle ear to reduce fluid build-up).
Acute otitis externa (AOE) is an infection in your ear that’s often caused by bacteria. It usually affects your ear canal (the opening that leads from your outer ear to your eardrum) and your middle ear (the area just behind your eardrum). If your AOE is caused by a bacterial infection, your doctor may prescribe you Ciprodex. It’s a combination medication with an antibiotic to help your body kill the infection, and a corticosteroid to reduce inflammation. Ciprodex comes as a liquid eardrop. The doctor that prescribes Ciprodex to you will tell you how much to take and how often.
Ciprodex active ingredients
Ciprodex contains two active ingredients – ciprofloxacin and dexamethasone – which work together to treat your acute otitis externa.
Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic that gets into bacteria cells and stops the bacteria from copying its DNA. This prevents the bacteria from multiplying and spreading, allowing your immune system to contain and kill the infection.
Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation caused by the infection. It works by stimulating cells in your ears to produce natural anti-inflammatory proteins. This lowers inflammation and gives you relief from the symptoms it causes, like swelling and pain.
