What is Chantix?

Chantix is a prescription medicine used to help adults stop smoking. Chantix is taken as a pill that is swallowed. You typically take tablets daily for a course of 12 weeks. Your physician will tell you the number of pills to take per day, and the strength of pills to take.

One of the reasons smoking cigarettes can be so addictive is because they contain a substance called nicotine. When you smoke, you inhale nicotine into your lungs, where it passes into your blood and is delivered quickly to your brain. Nicotine binds with structures in your brain called nicotine receptors which trigger the release of other chemicals, like dopamine. This can alter your mood and create a temporary feeling of euphoria.

Continued use of nicotine can reduce your brain’s sensitivity to dopamine. This means you need to keep smoking, and may need to smoke more, to maintain your wellbeing and to get the same feelings of euphoria. If you stop smoking, you can get withdrawal symptoms including cravings, irritability, anxious or depressed feelings, lack of concentration, insomnia, and increased appetite.

Because nicotine has this effect on your brain, it can be very difficult to quit smoking. Although most smokers in the US say they want to quit, and each year around half of them try, less than 10% manage to do so. The majority of US smokers who want to quit don’t try medical treatments for nicotine addiction, even though they can be effective. Chantix can help you quit smoking by reducing the withdrawal symptoms you feel when you cut down your nicotine intake, making quitting less distressing. It can also reduce the feelings of euphoria and enjoyment you get from smoking.

Chantix active ingredients

The active ingredient in Chantix is called varenicline. When you smoke, nicotine binds to nicotine receptors in your brain, causing the pleasurable feelings smoking gives you. Varenicline works by binding to these receptors and partially stimulating them, causing pleasurable feelings similar to those you get when you smoke. These feelings aren’t as strong, however. This can help reduce cravings and the withdrawal symptoms you get when you quit smoking. By binding to your nicotine receptors, varenicline also blocks them from receiving nicotine when you do smoke. This can reduce the feelings of pleasure you get from smoking.

Chantix side effects & Chantix drug interactions

Chantix can cause side effects. It’s important to note that not everyone will experience the same side effects if any at all. The most common side effects caused by Chantix affect around 1 in 10 people who take it. They include headaches, nausea, problems sleeping, inflammation of the nose and throat, chest infections, dizziness, and joint pain.

Chantix can cause more serious side effects. These are much rarer but do include seizures, strokes, heart attacks, suicidal thinking, psychosis (a loss of contact with reality), and changes in thinking and behavior, including an increase in aggression. Your physician will assess your risk of side effects versus the benefits of taking Chantix.

In some cases when you take certain medications together, they can interact with each other. This means that it can affect how they work. Certain side effects may also become more likely. Medicines that may interact with Chantix include:

  • Theophylline – a medicine used to treat breathing problems
  • Warfarin – a medicine taken to reduce blood clotting
  • Insulin
  • Cimetidine – a medicine used for gastric problems, if you have severe kidney disease

Make sure to tell your prescribing physician about all drugs you’re taking. This includes those mentioned above, and any vitamins or dietary supplements.

Chantix warnings & precautions

Don’t take Chantix if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient varenicline
  • Are allergic to any of the other ingredients in Chantix (listed in the leaflet that comes with the medication)
  • Are under 18 years of age

Talk to your physician before taking Chantix if you:

  • Have a history of depression
  • Have previously had suicidal thoughts or have tried to commit suicide
  • Have any problems with your heart
  • Have ever had fits or seizures
  • Are pregnant or trying to become pregnant
  • Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed

Chantix can cause side effects that can make driving and operating machinery more dangerous, such as dizziness and sleepiness. Don’t drive or use machinery when you’re taking Chantix until you’re confident you know how it affects you.
