What is Carbatrol?

Carbatrol is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Shire US Inc. Carbatrol is an anticonvulsant used to treat epilepsy and nerve pain such as trigeminal neuralgia and diabetic neuropathy. It is also used to treat bipolar disorder.

What doses of Carbatrol are available?

Carbatrol is available as an extended-release capsule, in the following doses: 100 mg.

Carbatrol may cause a severe or life-threatening skin rash, especially in people of Asian ancestry. You may need a blood test before you start treatment to determine your risk.

Take Carbatrol with food. Swallow the extended-release tablet or capsule whole. Do not crush, chew, or break it. The chewable tablet must be chewed before you swallow it. It may take up to 4 weeks for your symptoms to improve. Store at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and light.

Do not stop using Carbatrol suddenly as this may increase seizures. Read the medication guide provided and always speak with your healthcare provider about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Carbatrol active ingredients

Carbamazepine the active ingredient in Carbatrol is known as an anticonvulsant or antiepileptic drug.

Carbatrol side effects

The most common side effects of Carbatrol in clinical trials include:

  • Dizziness, nausea, vomiting
  • Loss of coordination
  • Drowsiness

In rare instances, Carbatrol can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Life-threatening skin rash or allergic reaction. Call your healthcare provider if you have a fever, unusual weakness, bleeding, bruising, or a skin rash that causes blistering
  • Changes in mood – report any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor
  • Liver problems – nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, yellowing of eyes and/or skin, dark urine
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Anemia – fever, sore throat, mouth sores, bleeding gums, nosebleeds, pale skin, easy bruising, unusual tiredness, feeling light-headed or short of breath

Carbatrol drug interactions

Carbatrol can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Agents with decreased levels in the presence of carbamazepine due to induction of cytochrome P450 enzymes – alprazolam, amitriptyline, clonazepam, cyclosporin, delavirdine, itraconazole, oxcarbazepine, phenytoin, praziquantel, protease inhibitors, quetiapine, risperidone, theophylline, warfarin
  • Agents that inhibit cytochrome P450 isoenzymes and/or epoxide hydrolasediltiazem, fluoxetine, fluvoxamine, grapefruit juice, isoniazid, itraconazole, verapamil
  • MAO inhibitors – isocarboxazid, linezolid, metaxalone, methylene blue, moclobemide
  • Macrolide antibiotics such as erythromycin
  • Calcium channel blockers such as nifedipine, nimodipine, nefazodone
  • Hormonal birth control pills, patches, or rings

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Carbatrol.

Carbatrol contraindications

You should not use Carbatrol if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient carbamazepine
  • Have a history of bone marrow suppression, (bone marrow depression)
  • Are allergic to it or to other anti-seizure medications such as oxcarbazepine, phenobarbital, phenytoin, and primidone
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Talk to your doctor before using Carbatrol if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Carbatrol
  • Have heart problems
  • Have liver disease or kidney disease
  • Have glaucoma
  • Have porphyria
  • Have depression, mood disorder, or suicidal thoughts
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant
