What is Arzerra?

Arzerra is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Novartis. Arzerra (ofatumumab) is a CD20-directed cytolytic monoclonal antibody that affects the body’s immune system. Monoclonal antibodies target and destroy cancer cells in the body to protect healthy cells from damage.

Arzerra is used for the treatment of patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). In some patients, ofatumumab is given in combination with chlorambucil, alemtuzumab, or with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide for the treatment of patients with relapsed CLL.

Arzerra is not FDA-approved to treat multiple sclerosis (MS). However, some people with MS have taken Arzerra as an off-label treatment for this condition.

To be sure Arzerra is not causing harmful effects, you may need blood tests to check your blood cells, kidney function, and liver function for several months, even after you stop treatment.

What doses of Arzerra are available?

Arzerra is available in injection form, in the following doses: 100 mg/5 mL single-use vial.

Administer as an intravenous infusion. The recommended dose and schedule is 12 doses administered as:

  • 300 mg initial dose, followed 1 week later by
  • 2,000 mg weekly for 7 doses, followed 4 weeks later by
  • 2,000 mg every 4 weeks for 4 doses

Premedicate with oral acetaminophen, oral or intravenous antihistamine, and intravenous corticosteroid. Always speak with a healthcare professional about any changes to your dose so they can monitor and evaluate your condition.

Arzerra active ingredients

Arzerra contains the active ingredient ofatumumab which binds specifically to the CD20 molecule. The CD20 molecule is expressed on normal B lymphocytes and on B-cell CLL.

Arzerra side effects

The most common side effects of Arzerra in clinical trials include:

  • Neutropenia, anemia
  • Pneumonia
  • Pyrexia
  • Diarrhea
  • Tiredness
  • Dyspnea
  • Rash
  • Nausea
  • Upper respiratory tract infections – fever, chills, cough with mucus, sore throat, chest pain, bronchitis, feeling short of breath

In rare instances, Arzerra can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Infusion Reactions
  • Cytopenias
  • Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML)
  • Hepatitis B reactivation – right-sided upper stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite, yellowing of your skin or eyes
  • Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS)

Arzerra drug interactions

There is currently no data for Arzerra’s interactions with other medications. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription drugs and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.

Arzerra contraindications

You should not use Arzerra if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient ofatumumab
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Arzerra

Talk to your doctor before using Arzerra if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Arzerra
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – may cause fetal harm
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed
  • Have an active or chronic infection
  • Have a condition for which you have used an immunosuppressant medication
  • Have hepatitis B virus (HBV infection

You should be current on all vaccines before you start treatment. Tell your doctor if you have received any vaccines within the past 4 weeks.

Arzerra generic

Arzerra is the trademark brand name for ofatumumab manufactured by Novartis. A generic version of ofatumumab is not available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Arzerra savings through NiceRx.
