What is Aromasin?

Aromasin is an FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) approved medication manufactured by Pfizer. Aromasin is an aromatase inhibitor used as:

  • Adjuvant treatment of postmenopausal women (past menopause) with estrogen-receptor positive early breast cancer who have had 2 to 3 years of tamoxifen treatment, and are moved to Aromasin to complete 5 years of hormonal therapy
  • The treatment of advanced breast cancer in postmenopausal women whose disease has progressed after tamoxifen therapy

What doses of Aromasin are available?

Aromasin is available in tablet form, in the following doses: 25 mg.

Take one 25 mg tablet once daily after a meal. Your doctor may require that you take extra vitamin D while you are treated with Aromasin.

Aromasin active ingredients

Aromasin contains exemestane as the active ingredient. Aromasin works by blocking the enzyme aromatase, which turns androgen into estrogen in the body. This reduces the amount of estrogen available to stimulate the growth of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer cells.

Aromasin side effects

The most common side effects of Aromasin in clinical trials include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Hair loss
  • Joint pain
  • Bone and muscle pain
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, headache and trouble sleeping
  • Increased appetite

In rare instances, Aromasin can cause more serious side effects. These can include:

  • Reductions in bone mineral density which may increase your risk of developing osteoporosis (bone loss)

Aromasin drug interactions

Aromasin can interact with other medications. These include:

  • Strong CYP 3A4 inhibitors
  • CYP3A4 inducers – rifampin, phenytoin, carbamazepine, phenobarbital, or St. John’s wort

This list is not exhaustive and other prescription drugs may interact with Aromasin. Tell your healthcare provider about all the medicines you take, including prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements.

Aromasin contraindications

You should not use Aromasin if you:

  • Are allergic to the active ingredient exemestane
  • Have had an allergic reaction to any of the other ingredients in Aromasin
  • Are a woman of premenopausal endocrine status
  • Are pregnant or are planning to become pregnant – Aromasin may harm an unborn baby. Use effective birth control (contraceptive) during treatment and for 1 month after your last dose of Aromasin

Talk to your doctor before using Aromasin if you:

  • Are taking any of the medications that could interact with Aromasin
  • Have high cholesterol
  • Have bone problems such as osteopenia, or osteoporosis
  • Have had a stroke or have blood clots, heart disease
  • Have high blood pressure
  • Have kidney problems
  • Have liver problems
  • Are breastfeeding or are planning to breastfeed

Aromasin generic

Aromasin is the trademark brand name for exemestane manufactured by Pfizer. A generic version of exemestane is available. Generic drugs are generally cheaper than brand-name drugs, but you can still find Aromasin savings through NiceRx.
