What is Afinitor prescribed for?

Afinitor is prescribed to patients with various types of cancer. It is also indicated for the treatment of benign brain or kidney tumors in patients with tuberous sclerosis complex, a genetic disorder.

Active Ingredient

The active ingredient in Afinitor is everolimus, a substance which slows or stops the growth of cancer cells. Afinitor is indicated for the treatment of certain types of kidney, breast, pancreas, lung, stomach, and intestinal cancers.

Conditions treated by Afinitor

Advanced Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer, or renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is the most common type of kidney cancer in adults. In early stages, the disease does not have many symptoms. As it advances, it begins manifesting in symptoms like fever, tiredness, weight loss, night sweats, and blood in the urine.

Afinitor is prescribed to patients with advanced RCC, when treatment (with medicines like Sutent and Nexavar) has not yielded any results.

Advanced HR+ HER2-Negative Breast Cancer

Breast cancer is the most common type of invasive cancer diagnosed in women. Hormone-receptor positive breast cancer grows in response to female sexual hormones. Symptoms of breast cancer can include: a lump in the breast, changes in the size and/or shape of the breasts, fluid coming from the nipple, breast skin that looks like orange peel.

Afinitor is prescribed, together with other drugs, to patients with advanced hormone receptor-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer.

Progressive Lung NET

A neuroendocrine tumor (NET) develops in neuroendocrine cells in the body, usually in the lungs and the gastrointestinal tract. Some patients experience zero early symptoms. Others may complain from symptoms like coughing, wheezing, and tightness in the chest.

Afinitor is prescribed to patients with lung NETs which have progressed and cannot be surgically removed.

Progressive GI NET

A neuroendocrine tumor (NET) of the stomach and intestine is a rare type of cancer that starts in certain parts of the gastrointestinal tract. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, heartburn, anemia, and blood in the stool.

Advanced Pancreatic NET

Pancreatic NETs form in the pancreas. Patients may or may not experience early symptoms. Tumors can be functional and nonfunctional. Functional tumors produce extra amounts of hormones (eg. gastrin, insulin, and others) that cause related symptoms. Nonfunctional tumors do not produce extra hormones.

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex

Tuberous sclerosis complex is a rare genetic disease which manifests in benign tumors of the brain, heart, kidneys, lungs, and other organs. Additional problems may include seizures, behavioral problems, skin abnormalities, and kidney disease. The condition is usually diagnosed in the first year of life.

There is no cure for tuberous sclerosis complex, though many of disease symptoms can be managed. Patients should be monitored regularly throughout their lives to ensure they are receiving the best possible care.

*Qualifying persons may obtain medications directly from patient assistance programs without any out-of-pocket cost (or for less than $49 per medication). However, our monthly flat rate of just $49 per medication spares you the hassle of tracking down the different programs and filling out all the required paperwork for each program.

Enrollees enjoy a full-service solution, as Prescription Care assists them and their physicians with the entire process. We prepare all required documents for the physician to sign, help enrollees manage all prescription refills, monitor eligibility criteria, and maintain enrollment.

**If you do not receive medications because you were determined to be ineligible for the prescription assistance by the applicable pharmaceutical companies and you have a letter of denial, we will refund any fees you paid toward medications for which you did not qualify to receive prescription assistance (Refund).

To receive a Refund, you must send the letter of denial to us by fax to 866-262-2603, or by e-mail to [email protected] within 30 days of your receipt of such letter. The Refund is your sole and exclusive remedy for any fees you may wish to dispute.
